I recently completed a sculpting course where I sculpted my head. The clay was very gritting but there was no wedging involved. When the teacher showed me how to open up the head and scrape out the walls to make it approx. 1/4' thick, she showed me how to slip head together (which I did and she checked it), I brought it home with me to fire. I have a small studio with 2 kilns. I fired it and it exploded in the kiln. Obviously it wasn't ready to be fired. Just the cheek, chin and part of forward came off. I have the balance of the clay we used and I was wondering how I might mend the areas that came off. Any suggestions. I would be most gratefull.

Were all cavities vented? It sounds like the head or parts of it was sealed.

1/4in is a bit thin for a big piece.

How is it that someone with a studio and two kilns doesn't know these sorts of things?

1. Why not make a new one, which will likely be even better than the last as your skill has no doubt improved by the process and the next time you will wait for the piece to really be dry and you will know to fire it more slowly.

2. You can glue the pieces together (epoxy) with a less than satisfactory result, but of course, you can't use unfired clay to fix a piece that has already been fired. There is an exception to this using a special blend of clay and paper pulp and defloculant, but I can't image that this piece is worth the trouble.

I don't know about that, we're just talking about a bust. I doubt that it was actually only 1/4 inch thick if she had an explosion unless she was firing it leather hard or wetter rather than bone dry.

I have found paper clay (I am in Australia so if not available commercially where you are - look for recipe in book) wonderful for mending and you can fire it after a couple of days. Marg

Part of the forward, huh? What sort of girl are you? Start again, or else send all parts to Africa where paleontologists are searching. They'll be happy to reconstruct your head and decide how early an ancestor you were.

Try reattaching the pieces with Bondo Body Filler
