When I started, I had another skill to rely on for income. So there was an overlap of several years, from 1978 to 1984, when I bought equipment using income from my other business.

Made sculptures that opened up and hence were 'high fashion' handbags, made 3D oil paintings, renovated a house or two (lots of carpentry, tile and such), now making mixed media figurative sculpture which fortunately is also called dolls.

Hi, I work as a consultant, managed to find a house with a double garage half of which I have converted into a studio. I sculpt in marble, and a year ago the then managing director of my company agreed to let me work part time - three days a week. The new one thought that didn't befit a consultant so he reversed the decision. I am a bit unhappy about this. I think that carving marble doesn't provide for a living if you're not famous - and you have a chance to become famous if your dead, in which case you no longer worry about being paid... I managed to sell one piece so far, and I couldn't reproduce the circumstances which lead to that sale. But carving is for me such that I couldn't live without it, so I do it whatever the situation. The thing is, I find it difficult to apply all I know about business, marketing and all that to my own work. Art seems to follow other rules than the 'normal' markets. I'd be interested to learn from others who carve stone how they market themselves (don't tell me about books).

I am a multimedia designer three days a week, and a water pump service technician for the rest. I am lucky enough to have the facilities in my fathers garage, where you will find a grinder, a torch, and an arc welder. The materials I use are basically iron and steel pieces that I have found interesting, old chains and long bolts from heavy wire spools. So I guess you could say that I am a junk sculptor. I have only sold a few of my pieces, but they were enough to buy myself a wire feed mig welder. luckily my material costs are non existent- so all I have to pay for is propane, oxygen and flux core wire. I would love to do this full time, however with college loans hanging over my head, I must go where the steady paycheck is. Good luck to you all!
