This is “Ruffles” one of my hand built vases. There are 2 ruffled straps that attach to opposite sides of the pot. One rises up and over the other, without touching. Both suspended ruffles straps are self supporting and not touching the other at any spot.
I happen to love a challenge and have built this pot several times. I just love hearing people say, ‘it can’t be done’.
I finished with underglaze then clear glaze over, so that I could get that shaded look.

It looks very interesting, though a little hard to see the detail with the photos being small. You can make them larger if you like. (PM me if you would like me to explain how)
I am curious - do you use newspaper or sponge to support the ruffles till they dry?
I’ll try to get a larger picture for you.
There is little in the way of support, while the straps/ruffles firm. I simply built each strap from the bottom, adding a little at a time, as they firmed up and keeping the unfinished edge covered with foil.
I let gravity help me, then began the curve at the top, the last day.
Keeping those ruffled edges is the challenge, as they thin down to no more than 1/8" at the edge.
It’s the most fragile piece I build and the miracle is getting it all the way to the kiln.
These pics are much better. Its a lot clearer now. I was sure that you make the ruffle and then attached it. I never thought of building it from both directions at once…. :-)
