Could someone please tell me what my options are if I want to sculpt on a large scale with a non water-based clay ? Plastacine is probably not an option...

Hi! This is just my experience with it but I have used roma plastilina with silicon(the hardware store variety) and never had a problem with sulphur in the clay reacting to the silicon. I dont even use a shellac coating on the piece before I mold it(only down side

[Either to use a whole lot of it, or to build a structure using other materials and cover it with a layer of oil-based clay.]

[Why not? If you're talking about oil-based clay in general, not a particular brand, then what other non water-based clay is there? What are you trying to end up with? If you intend to ultimately cast this in another material, you might be able to work directly in the other material and skip the clay step entirely. I have a recipe for oil-based clay posted on my site, under Techniques of Sculpture/Modeling.]

Chavant Clay's are best in my opinion. They specialize in oil based clays & offer both sulfur & non-sulfur-based product lines. They are a small company based in Red Bank, NJ; but their products are distributed widely throughout the world. Check their website at: www.chavant.com

They do send out really great sampler boxes with chunks of all their clays - all you have to do is ask them...
