Seal/paint water based sculpture

I have made several small sculptures out of water based clay and want to paint them. However, since acrylics are water based, as is the gesso I was thinking of using as a base coat, what are my options in base and colorants. My preference is matte, not shiny.

Perhaps you may consider firing them to terra cotta before you paint with acrylic colors.

Firing would be a good thing, however I have no way of doing so. I also fear the different thicknesses in the sculpture walls might cause cracking. I'll try and research if there is ay way to do this -- but IS there a way to paint the raw clay???

First I would sun dry them thoroughly.
Then I would apply a lacquer and then paint with acrylics.
