Hi,
I've made a 3d cast of my son's hand using plaster of Paris and am.wanting to spray it gold...do I need to prep it before I spray it or put anything on it after I've sprayed it?

before you paint it gold make the base color black. and the gold will look better. i always paint something black first if i want to paint it silver or gold. try this on a piece of white paper and you will see the difference. the paints i use for this job are acrylics. i made a cast of my two grand children holding hands. if you are using spray. after it is painted i would use clear spray. acrylic varnish.

Thanks for your reply, so can I paint straight onto the plaster cast or do I need to put a base coat or sealant on first?
I've only got a can of gold spray paint but I don't want to spray that on it if it needs sealing first? I just wasn't sure if the spray paint would just soak into the cast and end up patchy?
Thanks

if its a good heavy plaster you can paint over it without a prime coat. but it would look better with a black prime coat behind the gold because the gold will look more real. if its the cheap casting plasters. then its more likely the paint will need more than one coat as it could soak through. paint it black first then seal it before the gold goes on. it will make the gold or silver more metallic looking. the hand looks good so it deserves a good finishing touch.

Ah thanks I just used craftmills "superior stonecast powder". It's my first attempt and had no idea what I needed to buy or where/what good quality plaster powder is. It's ok for a first attempt but I've got air bubbles all over the surface so am attempting another one now

just a little wet plaster on the fingers will fill in tiny holes. then clean it. i made my grand childrends hands i asked them to hold hands and put them in the algae but there is three of them now so the youngest is nearly three so ill have to make another of all three.

What should the consistency of plaster be? It's quite runny...I mixed 100mls water with 150g of powder?

most all plasters if you have scales. is 30.grams of water. then ad 100.grams of powder. let it soak for 1 minuet then give it a good stir and your ready to fill your moulds.
