wearable art

Mostly we think of art as large, or on the wall or on pedestals… very few of us would think of art as something to wear.

There is a whole movement, and not a very young one at that of wearable sculpture, one of a kind jewelry pieces.

From Howard I learned about an exhibit at the Renwick Gallery  “Ornament as Art: Avant-Garde Jewelry from the Helen Williams Drutt Collection”

Helen Williams Drutt has a passion for art jewelry

Drutt’s more than forty years spent acquiring contemporary and modern jewelry. Wearable art has been Drutt’s passion, beginning with her response to the resurgence of the craft movement in America right after World War II

Art is art is art no matter what size it is. People who make sculpture jewelry have a passion for detail (I should know) the smaller the piece is the more detailed it can get.

Being so small enables the eye to take in the whole piece at once creating more intence paterns and giving the viewer or wearer the ability of a birds eye view from every direction. (not something possible with larger scale pieces)
