Hello,

I am new to these pages so forgive me if I am being inappropriate. I have been lurking for a little while to check out the discussions and have posted the odd comment, however this is a request for information. I am currently writing a thesis and wish to explore many avenues of information resources. Based on the discussions I have read here, I thought this might be a good resource.

To be very general and brief, the object of my research is Cycladic figurative sculpture and more broadly of Cycladic culture of the early Bronze age. I am hoping to speculate on a theory of why these artefacts exist, relating to contemporary minimalism (as in this century and not just the minimalist genre of the 1960s and 70s).

Any suggestions, information, objections would be gratefully received. Thanking you all in anticipation.

Michael

Well, I can't help you but I'm sure others will. I can only ask that you share your discoveries with the group as it sounds like an interesting topic. Good luck.

Michael, Why don't you tell us something about Cycladic art and culture? We all know the Venus of Willendorf, then there's a blank until we come to Mycenean and Minoan work. Pictures of it

..................

There is a website for the Musem of Cycladic Art, at:
http://www.cycladic-m.gr/

(although for most people it will take forever to load the gratuitous shockwave graphic on the homepage...)

Three books at amazon.com:

The Cycladic Spirit : Masterpieces from the Nicholas P. Goulandris Collection Colin Renfrew, et al / Hardcover / Published 1991

Early Cycladic Sculpture : An Introduction Pat Getz-Gentle, Pat Getz-Preziosi / Paperback / Published 1994

Sculptors of the Cyclades : Individual and Tradition in the Third Millennium B.C. Pat Getz-Preziosi / Hardcover / Published 1987

I also know of:

Art and Culture of the Cyclades J. Thimme / 1977, University Press, Chicago

Cycladic Art Christos Doumas / 1983, British Museums Publications Ltd.

I suppose there's a lot more; this is just off the top of my head.

May I speculate on their use as 'love toys' akin to modern-day ones. Dildos, if you will...

[This is to account for the 'wear and tear'? While I suppose it is (barely) possible, it would seem far from pleasurable to use these statues in this manner- especially the ones with harps, etc. But if you decide to experiment with a replica, please report back...]
