Art In Place - Public Art In Charlottesville

I love urban art. Any kind. I love it most when a City takes it on itself to bring art to its citizens in various forms and ways, when the driving motivation is taking art out of the museums and galleries and putting in the streets making it accessible to all.

(I am not sure which of Dough Makemsons pieces is on display through Arts in Place, so I posted a Picture of Henry because I like him)

Charlottesville has such a program called Art In Place - it is an 8 year old public arts project, providing large scale public sculpture throughout the city, the down side being you get to see the art on the go in from your car so you can’t really hang out and muse about a sculpture.
The nicest thing about it is how dynamic it is each year there is a new bunch of sculptures chosen by a board of jurors.

This years picks were installed during October and will be up till next September
these are the chosen artist for this year:

Hanna Jubran (Grimesland, North Carolina)

Doug Makemson (Commerce, Georgia)

Gary Mitchell (St. Louis, Missouri)

Gert Olson (Jupiter, Florida)

Karl Saliter (Cornwall Bridge, Connecticut)

Antoinette Prien Schultze (Eliot, Maine)

Kenneth M. Thompson (Blissfield, Michigan)

Adam Wells (Pembrooke, North Carolina)

Chris Wubbena (Jackson, Missouri)

Joyce Audy Zarins (Merrimac, Massachusetts)
