One of the older guys that works here was given these almost 50 years ago by an 'old guy from the war'. I made a little web site with a few pictures (including links to high res ones) at http://ospreynest.org/pete/. I think Pete was hoping to supplement his retirement by selling these. Although they are pretty neat (and heavy!) I told him they probably weren't worth much. Maybe if he's lucky a few hundred dollars.

I hope, for Pete's sake, I'm wrong. Does anybody know anything about these?

Rick

Check the pics. Looks like they are all broken to me.

I don't know anything about these sculptures, but being born and raised in the Philippines and having visited every part of the country I will have to say that this is not of Philippine origin. The images look like they are of buddhist monks and the Philippines has never been big on Buddhism. If I were to guess, I would even say they are more Thai, Cambodian, or Lao. However, it is also highly possible that these were brought to the Philippines by Japanese soldiers during WWII. There were many stories of Japanese soldiers leaving religious images behind as they retreated as the war ended. Some were even made of 24K gold.

I hope this helps.

I just checked and the links seem to work. Perhaps we had a problem with our server at the time you looked. Please try again and let me know what you think.
